Dark Canyon Wilderness

Dark Canyon Wilderness is a 46,359-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Utah, managed by the Forest Service. This is genuine backcountry—no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel. The landscape is primitive and rugged, offering hikers and backpackers the opportunity to explore remote terrain on foot with minimal infrastructure and maximum solitude.

The wilderness is managed under strict Leave No Trace principles. Visitors must be entirely self-sufficient, carrying all water and supplies, and pack out all waste. There are no maintained trails, developed campsites, or services within the boundary. This is country for experienced backcountry travelers comfortable with route-finding and navigation.

Access is by foot only. Seasonal considerations depend on elevation and snowfall patterns typical of southeastern Utah; spring and fall are often ideal windows, though summer is possible at lower elevations. Winter conditions can make travel extremely difficult or impassable. Plan ahead: permits, maps, and knowledge of current conditions are essential before entry.
