Cougar Canyon Wilderness Area

Cougar Canyon Wilderness Area is a 10,632-acre federally protected wilderness in Utah managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive backcountry where motorized travel, mechanical transport, and road infrastructure are prohibited—a true non-motorized landscape shaped by canyon and high-desert terrain.

The area is suited for hiking and backpacking in a quiet, remote setting. Visitors should expect solitude and self-reliance; there are no maintained facilities, and you'll need to be entirely self-sufficient with water, shelter, and navigation. This is Leave No Trace country: pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly away from water sources, and travel lightly on the land.

Access requires a high-clearance vehicle to approach trailheads; there are no paved roads into the wilderness itself. Spring through fall is the practical window, though winter snow and summer heat can both present challenges depending on elevation and exposure. Always check current conditions with the BLM before heading out, and be prepared for remote, rugged terrain with limited emergency services nearby.
