The Cecil D. Andrus-White Clouds Wilderness Area spans nearly 91,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in Idaho, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a true Wilderness designation. This means no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel of any kind—the landscape remains primitive and roadless, open only to foot and non-motorized access.

Backpacking and hiking are the primary ways to experience this remote country. The terrain offers genuine solitude for those willing to travel on foot through undeveloped terrain, away from civilization and its infrastructure. Visitors should expect true wilderness conditions: no maintained facilities, no trail markers in many areas, and total self-reliance.

Federal Wilderness rules are strict and non-negotiable. Leave No Trace principles are essential—pack out everything you pack in, camp well away from water sources, and travel lightly on the land. Camping is permitted only in designated backcountry campsites or dispersed areas well away from water. All water must be treated before drinking. Because this is genuine wilderness, advance planning, solid navigation skills, and appropriate gear are not optional. Access is typically seasonal, with early summer through fall being the primary window before snow and harsh weather make travel difficult or impossible.
