Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.Wilderness Area

Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area protects nearly 30,000 acres of coastal South Carolina backcountry managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This federally designated Wilderness offers primitive, non-motorized recreation in an undeveloped coastal setting where hikers and backpackers can experience solitude far from roads and mechanized travel.

Visitors must travel on foot or by non-motorized boat to access the interior. All travel follows Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and respect the wilderness character that makes the area special. No motors, mountain bikes, or mechanized equipment are permitted. The refuge supports wildlife viewing and photography opportunities throughout the landscape.

Access is seasonal and weather-dependent. Spring through early fall offers the most reliable conditions for backcountry travel, though summer heat and humidity are significant. Winter storms and rough water conditions limit safe passage. Plan visits during calmer months and always check current conditions and access points with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before you go.
