About Canaan Mountain Wilderness Area

Canaan Mountain Wilderness Area is a 44,450-acre federally designated Wilderness in Utah managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The area offers backcountry hiking and backpacking across primitive terrain where motorized travel and mechanized equipment are prohibited. Visitors seeking solitude will find a remote, non-motorized landscape where the wilderness character is preserved through strict Leave No Trace principles and no-road management.

Access is foot-traffic only—expect challenging, unmarked or minimally maintained routes typical of BLM wilderness. Spring and fall offer stable conditions, though snow and cold can close routes in winter months. Summer heat is a factor in southern Utah. Plan accordingly for water, navigation, and self-sufficiency; this is genuine backcountry where you are responsible for your own safety and the land's protection.
