Cabinet Mountains Wilderness

Cabinet Mountains Wilderness is a 93,767-acre federally protected backcountry area in Montana managed by the Forest Service. The landscape offers rugged terrain suited to foot travel and pack stock, with opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and wilderness camping away from established facilities. Solitude and primitive conditions define the experience here—visitors should expect no roads, motorized access, or mechanized travel of any kind.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and traveling on foot or horseback. The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, use existing sites when possible, and travel lightly on the land. These protections preserve the area's backcountry character and ensure its recovery from use. Seasonal access is limited by snow and weather; most hiking and backpacking occurs during summer and early fall, while winter conditions close or severely restrict travel.
