About Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness spans over a million acres across northeastern Minnesota as a federally protected Wilderness—a vast, primitive backcountry where motors, roads, and mechanized travel are prohibited. The landscape is characterized by boreal forest, thousands of lakes, and interconnected waterways that form the foundation for non-motorized recreation. This is a place defined by solitude and self-reliance: visitors navigate by paddle and portage, camp at designated sites, and follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the landscape's wild character.

Canoe travel is the primary means of exploring the Wilderness, with paddlers threading between lakes via portage trails. Backpacking and hiking routes also access the interior, offering an alternative for those on foot. The season runs roughly from late spring through early fall, when water levels and weather permit safe passage. Winter brings harsh conditions that close most access. Access points exist at the Wilderness boundary; from there, visitors rely entirely on their own power and skill. The Forest Service maintains the area and enforces wilderness regulations—camping is permitted only in designated areas, group sizes are limited, and fires are restricted. This is genuine backcountry: expect to be self-sufficient, carry all supplies, and encounter minimal infrastructure once you depart.
