The centerpiece is the Flambeau Lake Chain, a series of interconnected lakes sitting at 1,620 feet elevation where walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and northern pike are all legitimate targets depending on season and structure. Little Trout Lake, Eagle Lake, and Middle Ellerson Lake round out the local options and give anglers quieter alternatives when the main chain sees heavier boat traffic on summer weekends. The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa manages much of the water in this area, which means tribal licensing requirements apply on certain lakes in addition to Wisconsin DNR regulations — sorting that out before you launch is non-negotiable. Most of the fishing here is accessible to beginners, particularly on the main chain where walleye and bass hold predictable patterns around weed edges and rocky points. That said, the northern pike fishing rewards anglers who know how to work larger presentations through shallow bays in early season. If you're driving up from Madison or Milwaukee, plan to arrive midweek if you can — summer weekends on the chain get busy.
A standard Wisconsin DNR fishing license is required on most waters here, but some lakes within the Lac du Flambeau Reservation also require a tribal fishing permit issued by the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Check which body of water you're targeting before you go, because the licensing requirement varies by lake. Buying both upfront is the simplest approach if you plan to move around.
Walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and northern pike are all present in the Flambeau Lake Chain. Walleye are the most sought-after and tend to be the primary reason most visiting anglers make the trip. Bass fishing on the chain is solid, with largemouth holding in weedy shallows and smallmouth favoring rockier structure.

Early morning and the hour before sunset are consistently the most productive windows, particularly for walleye, which feed actively in low light. Midday fishing in summer can slow down significantly as boat traffic increases and fish push deeper. If you're targeting northern pike, early morning in shallow bays during spring and early summer is your best window.
For walleye on the chain, a medium-light spinning rod with jigs and live crawlers covers most situations. Northern pike fishing calls for heavier tackle and wire leaders to handle their teeth. If you're hitting Little Trout Lake or the smaller lakes like Eagle or Middle Ellerson, a lighter setup works well and those waters tend to see less pressure than the main chain.
The Flambeau Lake Chain is rated easy access and the fishing is approachable for beginners, especially for bass and panfish from shore or a small boat. Walleye fishing has a steeper learning curve since it requires more attention to depth and presentation, but guided trips are available in town if you want help getting dialed in quickly.
