Dallesport sits on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge, and its main climbing draw is Horsethief Butte -- a basalt formation that packs a surprising range of routes and boulder problems into a compact area. The 29 listings here cover everything from short bouldering circuits to roped crack and face climbing, so there's genuine variety regardless of your skill level. Beginners can work through problems like Little Dipper and Cool Corner, while climbers looking for more technical movement will find routes like East Wall Offwidth, Green Slab Ravine, and the face routes along the East Grotto walls (A through D) worth the effort. The Main Corridor and Amphitheater areas give the crag a natural layout that makes it easy to move between problems without a lot of trail navigation. Bouldering is well represented -- Thin Face, Crack Seam, Cojones, and Spot You to Death are among the problems on the list -- and most of them are accessible without a long approach. The rock is Columbia River basalt, which tends to be featured and textured but can have sharp edges, so tape is worth bringing. Wind is a consistent factor this close to the Gorge, and it can make a 65-degree day feel significantly colder than expected.
Spring and fall are the most reliable seasons. Summer temperatures in the Gorge regularly push into the 90s and the basalt absorbs heat, making afternoon climbing uncomfortable from roughly late June through August. Winter days can be climbable when it's dry, but the area gets wind-driven cold snaps that cut sessions short. Early morning starts in summer are worth it if you're set on going.
Horsethief Butte is within Columbia Hills State Park, which charges a Discover Pass for vehicle access -- the standard Washington State Parks day-use fee applies. Check current Washington State Parks requirements before your visit, as access rules and seasonal closures (particularly for cultural and wildlife protection) have changed in the past and could change again.

For bouldering problems like Thin Face, Hugs and Crevices, and Nightmares, you'll want a crash pad, climbing shoes, and a brush. The roped routes include crack climbing (Entrance Crack Left/Hand, Entrance Crack Right/Stem, East Wall Offwidth) and face climbing, so a standard rack with cams and nuts covers most of the trad lines. Bring tape -- the basalt edges can be rough on skin.
The area has a real mix. Problems like Little Dipper and Cool Corner are approachable for newer boulderers, while routes like East Wall Offwidth and Cojones are aimed at more experienced climbers. If you're just starting out, the bouldering circuit is a lower-commitment way to get on the rock before committing to roped routes.
The approach to Horsethief Butte and its sub-areas -- including the Main Corridor, Amphitheater, and East Grotto walls -- is short, generally under 15 minutes of walking from the parking area. The compact layout means you can move between bouldering and roped climbing zones without much hiking, which makes it a practical half-day destination.
