Westhaven-Moonstone sits on the Humboldt Coast where the climbing is almost entirely coastal bouldering and trad routes on sea-stack and bluff rock. The two main areas, Houda Point and Luffenholtz Beach, are accessible from Highway 101 and see far less traffic than inland California crags, which matters when you want a problem to yourself. The bouldering circuit here leans heavily on traverses and low-angle jug hauls — Houda Traverse, South Side Traverse, and Laces Out aka Houdini Traverse are good examples — but there are also steeper problems like Jugs Cave Direct and She's Got Jugs that reward pulling hard. On the roped side, routes like Back Door Man, Centipede, Sea Breeze, and Implements Under Destruction (IUD) give you something to project if you're staying more than a day. The rock is coastal sedimentary, which means it can be sharp on crimps and slick when damp. Salt air and wave spray are real factors here, not just atmosphere. With 26 active listings spread across Houda North, North Luffenholtz Beach, and Luffenholtz Beach, there's enough variety to keep a long weekend interesting without driving anywhere.
Late spring through early fall generally gives you the driest rock and the most daylight. Summer fog is common in the mornings, so midday sessions often work better than early starts. Winter is wetter and the rock stays damp longer, but dry spells do happen and the areas see almost no crowds.
It leans bouldering — the majority of the 26 listings are problems, including traverses like Houda Traverse and South Side Traverse and steeper lines like Radiobread and Gawko. That said, there are legitimate roped routes at Houda North and Luffenholtz Beach, including Back Door Man, Centipede, Sea Breeze, and Local Motion, so bringing a rack and a rope is worthwhile if you climb both disciplines.

For bouldering, bring a crash pad, climbing shoes, and a brush — the rock can hold chalk poorly in humid conditions. For the roped routes, a standard trad rack is the safe assumption since these are coastal bluff climbs without guaranteed fixed anchors. Check recent trip reports before you go, as anchor conditions on sea-facing rock can change.
Both areas are reached from Highway 101 with relatively short walks, making them accessible compared to backcountry crags. Luffenholtz Beach has a parking pullout and a trail down to the beach. Tidal conditions matter at both locations — some problems and routes sit close enough to the water that a high tide or large swell will shut them down, so check a tide chart before you go.
There's a reasonable spread. Traverses like Houda Traverse and Laces Out aka Houdini Traverse are approachable for intermediate boulderers working movement, while problems like Jugs Cave Direct and routes like Implements Under Destruction (IUD) and Think Big suggest harder options for experienced climbers. Beginners can find their footing here but will get more out of it with some prior outdoor experience, since the coastal environment adds variables that a gym doesn't prepare you for.
