Three Rivers sits at the gateway to Sequoia National Park, and the climbing here reflects that setting: granite and metamorphic rock, warm valley temperatures for much of the year, and a range of areas spread across the foothills and canyon walls above the Kaweah River. With 113 active listings, the area covers everything from roadside bouldering to multi-pitch crack climbing. Beginners can work movement on the Potwisha Campground Boulders or the River Slab, while crack climbers have a legitimate menu to work through at the Race Crack Area, including Race Crack itself and routes like Paul's Crack, Mitchell Crack, and Jammies. The Silly Pinnacle and its direct finish give face climbers something to aim for, and Castle Rocks is the area's most prominent destination for longer routes, with lines like Crescent Crack First Pitch Free, Fractured Skies, and North Arete representing the upper end of what's available. The Slickrock Bouldering Area rounds out the bouldering options for those who prefer problems over pitches. Most of the climbing is accessible without technical approach, which makes Three Rivers practical for a weekend trip rather than a full expedition.
Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the most reliable seasons. Summer temperatures in the Kaweah River canyon regularly push above 100°F, which makes low-elevation areas like the Potwisha Campground Boulders and River Slab uncomfortable or unusable midday. Castle Rocks sits higher and stays cooler, but summer climbing there still works better with an early start.
Both are well represented. The Slickrock Bouldering Area and Potwisha Campground Boulders are dedicated bouldering spots, and the River Slab adds another option. For roped climbing, the Race Crack Area, Castle Rocks, and Silly Pinnacle all have established routes, with crack climbing making up a significant portion of the roped inventory.

Some climbing areas fall within Sequoia National Park boundaries, which requires a park entrance fee. Potwisha Campground is inside the park, so you'll pay to enter. Areas outside the park boundary generally don't require permits for day use, but check current NPS guidelines before your trip since regulations around specific zones can change.
A standard rack of cams covering finger to hand sizes covers most of what's at the Race Crack Area, given that routes like Race Crack, Paul's Crack, and Mitchell Crack are crack-focused lines. Bring a few nuts as well. Helmets are worth wearing given the rock character in the canyon.
Yes, with some planning. The bouldering areas at Potwisha and the River Slab are low-commitment and accessible, and some of the shorter routes at the Race Crack Area work well for climbers building crack technique. That said, Castle Rocks involves a longer approach and more committing terrain, so newer climbers should sort out the easier local areas first before heading up there.
