Fort Irwin sits in the Mojave Desert northeast of Barstow, and the rock climbing here is a legitimate desert crack scene built around a tight cluster of features centered on Owl Tower and .50 Cal Tower. The 18 routes in the area lean heavily toward crack climbing — Covid Crack, Chod Crack, Pandemic Crack, Quarantine Crack, Corona Crack, and .50 Cal Crack are all in the mix, along with harder test pieces like the Sawtooth Hardmen linkup and the Unkindness project. Conspiracy Wall rounds out the main walls. The style is consistent: desert crack on Mojave granite and volcanic rock, with routes that reward solid hand and finger crack technique over sport-climbing polish. This is not a beginner destination. The majority of listed routes suggest an intermediate-to-advanced skill floor, and the desert environment adds its own tax — sharp rock, sun exposure, and temperature swings that can make a comfortable morning turn punishing by early afternoon. That said, for climbers who travel specifically for crack climbing in a quiet, uncrowded setting, Fort Irwin delivers a focused experience that most people outside the Barstow-to-Vegas corridor haven't heard of yet.
Fort Irwin is an active U.S. Army installation, and access is controlled. Civilians generally need to coordinate access in advance through the base, which typically means a background check and a point of contact on post. Do not assume you can drive onto the installation without prior authorization — confirm current access procedures directly with Fort Irwin's public affairs or recreation office before planning your trip.
The Mojave Desert makes fall and spring the most reliable windows, roughly October through early December and March through May. Summer temperatures at Fort Irwin regularly exceed 100°F, which makes midday climbing genuinely dangerous and morning windows short. Winter can work on warmer days but cold snaps and occasional wind are real factors. If you're visiting outside the spring and fall sweet spots, plan to start at first light and be off the rock by late morning.

A standard desert crack rack is the baseline — a double set of cams from finger-size through hand-size covers most of what's listed, including Covid Crack, Chod Crack, and Quarantine Crack. The .50 Cal Crack and routes on .50 Cal Tower may push into wider territory, so bring at least one or two larger pieces if you're heading there. Tape gloves are worth having for sustained crack climbing on sharp Mojave rock.
Probably not as a first or second outdoor climbing experience. The route list skews toward crack climbing that assumes you already know how to place gear and read desert rock. Linkups like the Sawtooth Hardmen and project-grade routes like Unkindness are clearly for experienced leaders. If you're newer to trad climbing, come with someone who has desert crack experience and treat it as a learning trip rather than a lead-everything outing.
Fort Irwin's climbing scene is genuinely low-traffic compared to more publicized Mojave destinations like Joshua Tree. Owl Tower and Conspiracy Wall offer some natural shade depending on the time of day, but desert walls lose shade quickly as the sun moves. Arriving early not only beats the heat but also gives you the best chance of having the area to yourself. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.
