About St. Mary's Glacier
St. Mary's Glacier is a historic backcountry ski destination in the Indian Peaks Wilderness near Idaho Springs, Colorado. Once a small rope-tow operation, the area is now primarily accessed by backcountry skiers and snowboarders seeking untracked powder and alpine terrain. The approach via St. Mary's Lake Trail (approximately 3 miles) gains roughly 700 vertical feet through subalpine forest before opening onto the glacier itself, offering stunning views of the Continental Divide. Summer visitors hike the same route to access the glacier for mountaineering and alpine photography.
The glacier provides approximately 600 vertical feet of skiable terrain with varied aspects and slope angles suitable for intermediate to advanced backcountry skiers. North-facing slopes hold snow well into spring, while south-facing aspects are best in early season. The high alpine setting at 11,000+ feet demands avalanche awareness, proper touring equipment, and winter mountaineering skills. Weather can deteriorate rapidly, and cornices pose serious hazards on ridgelines.
In summer months, St. Mary's becomes a premier hiking destination with direct access to the glacier and surrounding 13,000-foot peaks. The area offers excellent alpine photography, wildflower viewing in July and August, and access to backcountry camping in adjacent wilderness areas. Trail conditions improve significantly by mid-June, though snow patches can persist through early July at higher elevations.
Access is via the St. Mary's Lake trailhead near Idaho Springs, a scenic 90-minute drive from Denver. Winter travel requires avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel. The area receives substantial snowfall in season but experiences rapid spring melt. No mechanical lifts currently operate, making this purely a backcountry experience for self-propelled recreationists.
