Howelson Hill is a compact, community-focused ski area near Steamboat Springs offering accessible terrain for families and beginners. The hill features a modest 449-foot vertical drop served by one chairlift, two magic carpets, and a platter lift—making it ideal for learning skiers and snowboarders who want shorter lines and affordable lift passes. Beyond downhill, Howelson is known as a premier Nordic skiing destination with 22 kilometers of groomed cross-country trails spanning easy to advanced difficulty levels, including terrain that climbs to 2,375 feet elevation. The diverse run selection includes 10 easy downhill runs perfect for progression, plus intermediate and advanced options for varied skill levels.

The Nordic trail system is Howelson's signature feature, with well-maintained corridors through mixed forest that range from mellow 1km beginner loops to challenging 5+ km advanced routes with significant elevation gain. This dual-purpose facility creates a unique Colorado experience: day visitors can combine chairlift-served downhill skiing with backcountry-style cross-country skiing on the same ticket, maximizing mountain time.
