About Haugen’s Hill/Allenspark
Haugen's Hill/Allenspark is an abandoned ski area located in the Indian Peaks region of Colorado, near the small mountain community of Allenspark. Though no longer operating as a commercial ski resort, the area retains historical significance as a mid-20th century alpine recreation destination. The terrain around the former ski area offers excellent backcountry skiing and snowshoeing opportunities during winter months, with access to high alpine bowls and ridgelines characteristic of the Indian Peaks Wilderness boundary region. Summer visitors can enjoy hiking and trail running on the slopes and connecting trails, with dramatic views of the Continental Divide and surrounding 13,000+ foot peaks.
The location sits at approximately 10,500 feet elevation, providing reliable snow conditions during winter and cool, pleasant conditions for summer activities. The abandoned lift infrastructure and run patterns are still visible on the landscape, making it an interesting destination for ski mountaineers and backcountry enthusiasts seeking solitude and historical context. Access is primarily via the Allenspark area, requiring a short hike or skin up to reach the primary terrain. The area sees significantly less traffic than commercial resorts, offering a quieter alpine experience.
