Targhee National Forest

Targhee National Forest spans over 742,000 acres across Idaho, offering a large swath of public land managed by the Forest Service for multiple uses. The forest provides a mix of recreational opportunities typical of northern Rocky Mountain terrain: hiking and backpacking on established trails, dispersed camping throughout the landscape, fishing in streams and lakes, and scenic driving on forest roads. Hunting seasons draw visitors in fall and winter, and the forest also supports horseback riding and wildlife viewing.

Access and seasonality depend on elevation and snow. Summer months from June through September are the prime season for most activities, with spring (May) and early fall (October) offering shoulder-season access in many areas. Winter transforms the forest—higher elevations become snow-covered and many roads close, though this opens opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in suitable zones. Plan ahead regarding road conditions and trail status, especially in shoulder seasons, as the Forest Service manages access based on snow and weather.
