About Superior National Forest

Superior National Forest spans over a million acres across northeastern Minnesota, offering a vast landscape of forests, lakes, and streams managed by the U.S. Forest Service for multiple uses. The forest is a destination for hiking and backpacking along established trail networks, dispersed camping throughout its backcountry, and fishing in its abundant lakes and waterways. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the forest's water routes, while scenic drives provide access to viewpoints and trailheads. The forest also permits hunting and wildlife viewing, with opportunities to encounter the region's native species.

Summer and early fall represent the prime visiting season, when trails are snow-free and weather is mild. Spring and late fall allow access, though conditions become variable. Winter transforms the forest into a landscape suited for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, though heavy snow and cold temperatures make travel challenging. Access to the forest is straightforward from the surrounding communities and highway corridors, with numerous entry points for both day use and overnight recreation.
