About Sawtooth National Forest

Sawtooth National Forest spans nearly 590,000 acres across central Idaho and offers classic high-country recreation across a landscape of alpine peaks, mountain lakes, and forested valleys. The forest supports a full range of outdoor pursuits: extensive trail networks for hiking and backpacking, dispersed camping throughout the forest, cold-water fishing in streams and alpine lakes, and scenic driving routes that showcase the terrain. Hunting seasons draw visitors in fall, and winter brings snow to higher elevations, though access can be limited during heavy snow periods.

Visitation peaks in summer and early fall when trails are snow-free and weather is most stable. Spring and late fall offer quieter conditions but higher unpredictability—lingering snowpack in early season and early winter storms in late fall can affect high-elevation travel. Winter access is limited to lower elevations and maintained corridors; much of the forest becomes snow-bound from December through March. Plan around weather and seasonal access restrictions imposed by the Forest Service, and check current conditions before heading out, especially on less-traveled routes.
