Manistee National Forest

Manistee National Forest spans nearly 500,000 acres across Michigan's Lower Peninsula, offering a mix of woodland trails, water access, and dispersed recreation on multiple-use public land. The forest supports fishing in streams and lakes, hiking and backpacking along established trail networks, and opportunities for camping both at developed sites and in dispersed areas throughout the forest. Hunting is permitted seasonally, and scenic driving provides access to the landscape year-round.

Visitation is heaviest during summer and early fall when weather is mild and trails are fully accessible. Winter brings snow that can limit some activities but opens possibilities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Spring and late autumn are shoulder seasons with variable conditions. Access is straightforward via Michigan highways, and the forest welcomes day use and overnight stays under Forest Service rules.
