Lolo National Forest

Lolo National Forest spans over 1.3 million acres across west-central Montana, offering a vast landscape for backcountry travel, fishing, and dispersed recreation. The forest supports a network of trails suitable for hiking and backpacking, alongside opportunities for horseback riding through varied terrain. Fishing is available throughout the forest, and hunters use the area seasonally for big-game hunting during fall months.

Dispersed camping is permitted across much of the national forest, giving visitors flexibility to camp without developed facilities. Scenic driving routes wind through the forest, and the landscape supports wildlife viewing and photography year-round. Summer and early fall are the primary seasons for most activities, as heavy snow closes high-elevation routes and many backcountry areas from late fall through spring. Access is generally good from surrounding towns, though road conditions and trail passability vary significantly by season and elevation.
