Gallatin National Forest

Gallatin National Forest spans over 423,000 acres across Montana, offering the full range of public-land recreation on a landscape managed for multiple uses. You'll find extensive trail networks for hiking and backpacking, dispersed camping throughout the forest, fishing in streams and lakes, and scenic driving routes. Hunting is a significant use during fall seasons. The forest accommodates horseback riding and wildlife viewing as well.

Access is generally good during the snow-free months, typically May through October, with peak conditions from June through September. Winter weather closes many high-elevation routes and roads, making December through March hazardous for most activities. Spring and fall offer fewer crowds but variable conditions.
