Boise National Forest

Boise National Forest spans nearly a million acres across central Idaho, offering year-round recreation across a landscape of mixed terrain. The forest supports a broad range of activities: hiking and backpacking on established trail networks, dispersed camping throughout the backcountry, fishing in streams and alpine lakes, scenic driving on Forest Service roads, and hunting during regulated seasons. Winter brings opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in higher elevations.

Access is easiest May through October, when high-country roads and trails are snow-free. Summer months (June through September) see the heaviest use and most reliable conditions for all recreation types. Winter weather can close higher roads and trails by November, though lower-elevation areas may remain passable. The Forest Service manages the land for multiple uses, so you'll encounter both developed facilities and remote backcountry. Plan ahead for current conditions, road status, and any seasonal closures before visiting.
