About Wilford
Wilford is a ghost town in Navajo County, Arizona, situated along Black Canyon Road roughly 7 miles south of Heber-Overgaard. Its roots trace to April 1883, when a group of Latter-day Saints relocated here after their previous settlement at Brigham City failed. The community survived for several decades before persistent overgrazing by cattle degraded the land to the point that the town could no longer sustain itself. The last residents departed in 1926.
Visitors today are coming to a quiet, rural roadside site rather than a preserved historic district. The setting along Black Canyon Road makes it accessible by vehicle, but expect little in the way of standing structures or formal interpretation — this is a place for those drawn to the atmosphere of a vanished community rather than developed amenities.
