About Whitney

Whitney is a ghost town and unincorporated community in Baker County, Oregon, situated along Oregon Route 7 on the North Fork Burnt River. The community developed around the lumber industry, and its roadside location kept it on the map even as active operations wound down over the decades.

Visitors today find a quiet, largely faded settlement close to the Blue Mountains and the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The setting along the river corridor offers scenic appeal, and the surrounding national forest land provides a backdrop for exploration. Whitney is best approached as a brief stop rather than a destination in itself — remnants are sparse, and the interest lies mainly in the atmosphere and the drive along Route 7 southwest of Sumpter.
