West Hartley

Once a coal-mining community in eastern Contra Costa County, West Hartley grew up to serve the nearby coal mines and now stands as a ghost town. Sitting at 440 feet elevation roughly seven miles northeast of Mount Diablo, the settlement has faded into the surrounding landscape.

Visitors today will find little in the way of standing structures or formal infrastructure — this is a true ghost town, and the experience is primarily one of atmosphere and historical curiosity rather than dramatic ruins.
