Washunga

Washunga is a ghost town in Kay County, Oklahoma, whose history is rooted in the leadership of the Kaw tribe. The town took its name from the Kaw leader prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries — a name meaning 'bird' in the Kaw language, sometimes recorded as Washungah. It grew up around the Kaw Agency, the tribal headquarters, and was formally established there in 1903. A post office had operated at that location since 1880 and remained open until 1918, tracing the arc of the community's active years.

Today Washunga is a quiet, largely vanished settlement. Visitors drawn to its history will find little physical infrastructure remaining, but the site carries genuine significance as a place tied to Kaw tribal governance. It suits those interested in Oklahoma history and indigenous heritage more than outdoor adventure.
