Waldo

Waldo is a ghost town in Josephine County, Oregon, sitting roughly three miles from the California border. Its story begins in 1852, when it was founded as a gold mining camp under the name Sailor's Diggings. The settlement later took on the name Waldo to honor William Waldo, the Whig candidate for California's governorship in 1853 — a curious tribute rooted in the fact that Waldo campaigned here under the mistaken belief that the community fell within California's borders, and local residents apparently went along with it.

For visitors today, Waldo offers the quiet atmosphere of a place that has largely returned to the landscape. Its remote position near the Oregon-California line means access requires some planning, and the surrounding terrain reflects the rugged character of the region.
