Wagoner

Wagoner is a ghost town in Yavapai County, Arizona, sitting at an elevation of 3,383 feet above sea level. Its roots lie in mining, which drew settlers in the early 1800s, though by the early 1900s the community had faded into decline.

At its height, Wagoner supported a two-story hotel, a dance hall, a barn, and a general store equipped with a hand-pump gasoline dispenser — a modest but functioning frontier settlement. Interestingly, the town served a secondary purpose as a summer retreat, with families from nearby Phoenix bringing sick children there to escape the lowland heat. That practice ended once railroad service pushed into the region, making other destinations more accessible.

Visitors today are coming to a ghost town, so expectations should be set accordingly — the draw is historical atmosphere and the quiet high-desert setting rather than intact structures or developed amenities. Photography and sightseeing are the realistic activities here. The cooler elevation makes summer a reasonable time to visit, while winter months may present access challenges.
