About Tuscarora

Tucked against the eastern flank of the Tuscarora Mountains in Elko County, Nevada, Tuscarora is a ghost town with roots in silver production. The community sits roughly 40 miles north of Carlin and about 50 miles from Elko, placing it in a remote stretch of high desert that once drew prospectors and settlers to the region.

Today Tuscarora is an unincorporated community — quiet, sparsely inhabited, and carrying the weathered character typical of Nevada's boom-and-bust settlements. Visitors drawn to historic Western sites will find remnants of its past alongside wide-open landscapes. The drive out is itself part of the experience, and the isolation is real: services are essentially nonexistent, so come self-sufficient.

Summer and early fall offer the most reliable access, as winter weather in this part of Elko County can make rural roads difficult or impassable. Plan accordingly, top off your fuel before leaving Elko or Carlin, and treat the visit as a scenic and historical detour rather than a developed destination.
