About Trapps Mountain Hamlet Historic District

Tucked into the Shawangunk Ridge near Gardiner in Ulster County, New York, the Trapps Mountain Hamlet Historic District preserves the footprint of a rural settlement that was active from the late 1700s through roughly the mid-20th century. What makes the site unusual for the eastern United States is that any physical trace of it survived at all — most comparable subsistence-farming communities left little behind.

Residents here worked the land for their own needs while also participating in the forest products industry, a combination of livelihoods that sustained the community across multiple generations before it gradually faded away.

For visitors today, this is a place for quiet exploration and reflection rather than dramatic ruins. The surrounding ridge landscape rewards photography and wildlife viewing, and the historical character of the district makes it a worthwhile stop for anyone drawn to forgotten corners of the Northeast. Come prepared for uneven, lightly managed terrain, and note that late spring through early fall offers the most reliable access, with winter conditions on the ridge making travel difficult.
