About Tigerville

Tigerville — also known as Tiger City — is a ghost town in the Black Hills of Pennington County, South Dakota. Active from 1878 to 1885, it was a mining community whose rapid rise and eventual abandonment mirror the boom-and-bust pattern shared by countless Western settlements of that era.

Visitors come to take in the atmosphere of a place that once bustled with activity and now stands as a quiet reminder of how quickly frontier fortunes could reverse. Like most ghost towns of its age, little infrastructure survives, so expect a sparse landscape rather than standing buildings or interpretive signage.

Access to the Black Hills area is generally best from late spring through early fall, when roads and weather cooperate. Winter months can bring hazardous conditions, making a visit impractical. Photography and sightseeing are the primary draws for those making the trip out.
