About Terraville

Terraville is a ghost town in Lawrence County, South Dakota, with a history rooted in the mining era of the late nineteenth century. Founded in 1877 as a mining camp, the settlement grew into a full town before being acquired by the Homestake Mining Company. In 1982 it was demolished entirely to make room for mine expansion, leaving nothing of the original community standing.

Visitors should be aware that there is physically nothing to see on the ground — the town was not abandoned and left to decay but was deliberately razed. The site serves more as a historical footnote than a destination, and anyone drawn here by curiosity about Lawrence County's mining past will find the landscape shaped by industrial use rather than preserved remnants.
