About Tercio
Tercio is a ghost town in Las Animas County, Colorado, with roots in the coal mining industry. It was the third coal mining community developed by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, and that sequence gave the town its name. A post office served the community from 1902 until 1949, marking nearly half a century of activity before the settlement faded.
Visitors today will find a quiet, historically layered site characteristic of Colorado's former coal country. The federal government's Geographic Names Information System still lists Tercio as a populated place, though in practice it functions as a ghost town. Come with modest expectations — the draw here is atmosphere and history rather than developed amenities or infrastructure.
