About Sweden
Sweden is a ghost town in Duval County, Texas, situated roughly four miles southwest of Benavides along Farm-to-Market Road 359. Its post office had a fitful existence, opening first in 1884 before closing after just a year, then operating again from 1907 until a permanent closure in 1932. At its height in 1914, the population reached only 25 residents, and that number steadily dwindled until no one remained. The local school survived longer than most of the town itself, eventually being folded into the Benavides Independent School District during the 1950s.
For visitors, Sweden offers little in the way of standing structures or formal amenities — this is a quiet, largely vanished community set in rural South Texas. It suits those drawn to the contemplative experience of forgotten places, and photography is the most realistic activity for anyone making the trip out.
