Sunflower

Tucked along Arizona's Beeline Highway (State Route 87) about 23 miles northeast of Fountain Hills, Sunflower is a former mercury-mining district in Maricopa County that has quietly transitioned into a recreation hub. It sits on the western edge of Tonto National Forest, bordered by the Mazatzal Wilderness, giving the surrounding landscape a rugged, backcountry character.

Today the area draws hikers, campers, and OHV enthusiasts rather than miners. The wilderness adjacency means foot-travel options extend deep into undeveloped terrain, while the forest roads and open country attract off-road vehicles and those looking for dispersed camping away from developed sites.

Access is straightforward via Route 87, making Sunflower one of the more reachable wild-feeling destinations in the region. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions in this part of Arizona; summer heat can be intense at lower elevations, and winter occasionally brings cold enough weather to complicate travel on rougher roads.
