Sulphurdale

Sulphurdale is an abandoned mining town in Beaver County, Utah, founded in 1870. Although the community took shape early on — with homes, a school, a store, and company offices — large-scale mining operations didn't get underway until 1883. Even then, locating high-quality sulfur proved consistently difficult, and output gradually declined through the 1940s and 1950s. The mine and mill closed for good in 1966, and by the close of the 1970s the town had been fully abandoned.

Visitors today encounter a quiet, weathered site that reflects a century of boom, struggle, and slow decline. The remote setting in Beaver County lends it an austere character, and the remnants of a once-functioning community make it a compelling destination for history-minded travelers and photographers. Access is best attempted in the warmer months, as winter conditions in this part of Utah can make roads difficult or impassable.
