Spring Canyon

Spring Canyon — also known as Storrs — is a ghost town in Carbon County, Utah, with roots in the coal industry. The town's story began in 1912 when Jesse Knight acquired 1,600 acres of coal land and set about building both a mine and a company town. He named the settlement Storrs, honoring the mine superintendent, though that name gave way to Spring Canyon in 1924.

At its peak the operation was substantial. From 1924 through 1943 the mines turned out roughly 1,000 tons of coal daily, and during World War II production surged to 2,000 tons per day. That wartime demand proved to be the high-water mark. By 1946 the need for coal had dropped sharply, and the community's decline followed.

Today Spring Canyon is a ghost town, offering visitors a quiet look at a once-busy coal community. The setting in Carbon County lends itself to photography and sightseeing, though visitors should go in with realistic expectations — what remains is a remnant of the past rather than a restored historic site.
