About South Pass City

South Pass City is a ghost town in Fremont County, Wyoming, tucked about 2 miles south of the junction of highways 28 and 131. Its roots lie in gold mining, and its location near the historic Oregon Trail gave it significance beyond its size. When the gold mines eventually closed, the town emptied out and never recovered.

The entire community is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it one of the more formally recognized ghost towns in Wyoming. The nearest active settlement is Atlantic City. Visitors can reach South Pass City by passenger car, and what they find is a preserved historic site where the physical remnants of a former mining community sit within a landscape still shaped by the era of westward migration.
