Sixteen

Sixteen is a ghost town in southwestern Meagher County, Montana, with roots in both railroad construction and rural settlement. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad used the site as a station stop on its transcontinental main line, and the original rail corridor through the area dates to 1895, when the Montana Railroad built through and workers used Sixteen as a construction base camp. Over time the community grew into a gathering point for the ranchers and homesteaders who worked the surrounding land.

Today Sixteen is a remnant of that era, and visitors come primarily to take in the historic character of the site and its wide-open Montana setting. Photography and quiet exploration are the main draws. Access and conditions can vary seasonally in rural Meagher County, so visiting during the warmer months is advisable.
