About Singapore

Singapore was once a real Michigan town, now completely swallowed by the sand dunes along Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Kalamazoo River, near the communities of Saugatuck and Douglas in Allegan County. Its fate was sealed by deforestation: once the surrounding woodland was stripped away, there was nothing left to hold back the encroaching dunes. The demand for lumber to rebuild Midwestern cities devastated by fires in 1871 accelerated the process, and the town gradually disappeared beneath the sand.

Today there is nothing to see above ground. The ruins lie buried entirely under the dunes of the Lake Michigan shoreline, making this more of a curiosity to ponder than a site to explore. Visitors come for the striking dune landscape itself, set where the Kalamazoo River meets the lake — a scenic and historically layered stretch of shoreline worth experiencing even without visible remains.
