Serene

Serene is a ghost town in Weld County, Colorado, built as a company town by the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company to support coal mining operations at the Columbine Mine. At its peak it included company housing and a coal preparation plant, and a post office that served residents from January 1923 through August 1942.

Serene carries a somber place in Colorado labor history. On November 21, 1927, the site was the scene of the Columbine Mine Massacre, a violent confrontation that left it marked as one of the state's most significant moments of industrial conflict.

Visitors today will find little physical evidence of the town that once stood here. The site suits those interested in Colorado history and photography rather than recreational activity, and a realistic visit is a quiet, contemplative stop rather than a destination with developed access or preserved structures.
