Sego

Tucked into the narrow, winding walls of Sego Canyon in the Book Cliffs, this Grand County ghost town operated as a coal mining community from roughly 1910 to 1955. At its height it was a significant coal producer in eastern Utah, and the road that gets you there today still follows the old grade of the Ballard & Thompson Railroad — a spur line the town's founders built off the Denver and Rio Grande Western specifically to haul coal out of the canyon.

Visitors today find the remnants of that former community set against the dramatic canyon scenery. Access requires a 4x4 vehicle, and the route north from Thompson Springs — about five miles — reflects the rugged terrain that defined life and work here. The canyon setting makes it a rewarding destination for photography and historic sightseeing, but come prepared for primitive conditions with no services.
