Santa Rita

Santa Rita is a ghost town located near Brownsville in Cameron County, Texas. Its historical significance runs deep: the settlement is believed to have served as Cameron County's first government seat in 1848, and may have been the earliest town in the area to receive a name from English-speaking settlers. Long before that, the land functioned as a ranching community, predating even the founding of nearby Matamoros, Tamaulipas, in 1826. When Brownsville was chosen as the county seat shortly after 1848, the population largely drifted away, and Santa Rita faded into history.

Today the site offers little in the way of physical remains — this is a destination for history-minded visitors drawn by the story rather than standing structures. The flat South Texas landscape near the Rio Grande sets the scene, and the experience is largely one of quiet reflection on an early chapter of Cameron County's past.
