About Saints John

Tucked into Summit County, Colorado, roughly a mile from Montezuma, Saints John holds a notable place in the state's history as the site of one of the earliest silver discoveries in Colorado. The settlement went through a couple of name changes — first known as Coleyville, then Saint John — before arriving at its current name. Mining drove its existence, and when that era ended, the town faded from active community life.

Today Saints John is classified as a ghost town, though it retains a small number of inhabitants, making it a rare example of a former mining settlement that never went entirely dark. Visitors can expect a quiet, historic atmosphere rather than a fully preserved or interpreted site. The setting in Summit County means access is realistically a warm-weather proposition, with mountain winters making the area difficult or impassable for much of the year.
