About Rochester
Rochester is a ghost town in Pershing County, Nevada, situated roughly 110 miles east of Reno. It grew as a mining community and has since fallen into abandonment, leaving behind two distinct sections with very different stories.
The lower portion of the site can still be reached by visitors, though a wildfire in 2012 destroyed much of what remained there. The upper section is no longer visible at all — mine tailings from the more recent Coeur Rochester open pit operation have buried it entirely. What a visitor finds today is a heavily altered and partially erased landscape rather than a preserved ghost town.
