About Randsburg

Randsburg is a small unincorporated community in Kern County, California, perched at 3,504 feet in elevation and sitting about 17 miles south of Ridgecrest. Its economy was built on gold, and the town's identity is inseparable from that industry's boom-and-bust rhythm.

Today, Randsburg is barely a town in the conventional sense — the 2020 census counted just 45 residents, a notable decline even from the 69 recorded in 2010. The Census Bureau officially classifies it as a census-designated place. What visitors find is a genuine remnant of the gold era: a handful of surviving historic structures, a quiet desert setting, and the atmosphere of a place that time has largely passed by.

Access is straightforward by passenger car, so no special vehicle is required. The high desert elevation keeps summer temperatures more manageable than the valley floor, though the surrounding terrain is arid and exposed. Come prepared with water and provisions, as services in a community this small are extremely limited.
