Piety Hill

Piety Hill is a ghost town in Shasta County, California, situated along Cloverdale Road near the community of Igo. Its roots trace to 1849 and the California Gold Rush, when a small camp of miners rapidly expanded into a town of roughly 1,500 residents. A separate Chinatown of around 600 people established itself nearby, with inhabitants engaged in both mining and farming.

The area supported large-scale operations, including the Hardscrabble mine, which opened in 1853. Water infrastructure was central to the industry here, provided by both the Dry Creek Tunnel and the Fluming Company. Today Piety Hill is a historical site, a quiet remnant of the boomtown era set in the Shasta County countryside.

Visitors come primarily to experience the sense of place and history rather than dramatic standing ruins. Access is via Cloverdale Road, and the site is best explored in the warmer months when roads and conditions are cooperative. Spring and fall offer comfortable temperatures, while winter weather in this part of California can make access unpredictable.
