Palisade

Palisade sits in Eureka County in northeastern Nevada, roughly 10 miles south of Carlin and about 33 miles southwest of Elko. What was once a functioning town owes its existence to the Transcontinental Railroad — the community grew up around one of the railroad's most significant local challenges, a rugged canyon to the west that now bears the town's name.

Today Palisade is effectively a ghost town. Visitors drawn by its railroad heritage will find a quiet, sparsely settled landscape rather than a preserved historic district. The honest reality is that little remains, and the experience is more about atmosphere and context than standing structures or interpretive exhibits.

Access is straightforward given the town's proximity to Carlin and Elko, both of which lie along major routes in this part of Nevada. There are no documented trails, facilities, or managed visitor services here, so come self-sufficient. Summer and early fall offer the most comfortable conditions for a stop; winter months in this region of Nevada can bring harsh weather that makes travel less practical.
