About Oregon City

Oregon City is a ghost town in Butte County, California, situated between Oroville and Cherokee. Its origins trace to the autumn of 1848, when a party of travelers arriving from Oregon via the Applegate and Lassen trails established one of the earliest mining camps in the county. The settlement went by different names over time — Bloomingdale and Hengy among them — before becoming known as Oregon City. Notably, the group's captain, Peter H. Burnett, went on to become California's first civil Governor within little more than a year of the camp's founding. For a period the town functioned as both a gold mining and supply center.

Today Oregon City is a ghost town, and visitors should expect remnants rather than a living community. The surrounding Butte County landscape is most accessible in the warmer months, with winter conditions potentially making access difficult. Photography and sightseeing are the realistic draws for anyone making the trip out.
