Old Sugar Mill of Koloa

On the island of Kauaʻi, the Old Sugar Mill of Kōloa marks the birthplace of what grew into Hawaiʻi's dominant industry. In 1835, Ladd & Company established a sugarcane plantation here, making Kōloa the site of the first commercially successful operation of its kind in the islands — a turning point that shaped the entire economic trajectory of Hawaiʻi.

Today, visitors find the physical remnants of that early enterprise: a stone chimney and foundations dating to 1840. The site was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in December 1962, a designation that reflects its outsized role in Hawaiian history relative to what little remains above ground.
